Tools and Techniques
ESW employs an array of techniques that apply the ideas developed by Stuart Hart and his colleagues to move companies more effectively towards sustainability. Using the BoP Protocol, Gaming, Sustainability Survey tools, and more, ESW helps build the organizational and personal capabilities for a sustainable enterprise.
The BoP Protocol
To facilitate the creation of sustainable enterprises, ESW introduces companies to the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) Protocol™, a pioneering, business-generating tool whose development is directed out of Cornell University. ESW assists companies in implementing the BoP Protocol by assembling “all-star” project teams drawn from an array of institutional partners, and training and guiding those teams in implementing the BoP Protocol. Additionally, ESW manages project logistics, budgets, communications, learning etc. for interested companies. The BoP Protocol section of this website presents a more detailed overview, and the Protocol Projects section describes several real-life initiatives.

Gaming: Simulation Tools
Corporations are increasingly using interactive strategy games to simulate the challenges posed by uncertain organizational environments and markets to plan their market entry. ESW is developing gaming/simulation approaches to help companies build a shared understanding of Sustainable Enterprise, thereby facilitating the incorporation of sustainability into competitive strategies.

Survey-Feedback Tools: The Survey of Sustainability (SOS)*
There is a growing need for tools that assess where companies stand regarding their integration of sustainability. In partnership with Denison Consulting, ESW is developing the “Survey of Sustainability” (SOS): A tool to help corporations “take the organizational pulse” related to the corporate sustainability climate. Intended for use by corporate and business leaders, the SOS asks managers and employees to rate their agreement with statements describing the organization’s approach to sustainable business. Survey results and feedback spur discussion, educational programs and other interventions necessary to motivate corporate change.
*The SOS is currently under development by ESW and Denison Consulting.
