ESW Initiatives

The BoP Protocol™ is a pioneering business incubation process that enables multinational corporations (MNCs) to generate new business opportunities at the Base of the Pyramid. Based on a participatory philosophy, the BoP Protocol™ is a model for business co-creation that marries MNCs’ resources, technologies and best practices with those of the community.

Becoming Native to Place

By forging lasting partnerships between the MNC and income-poor communities otherwise rich in local knowledge and social capital, the BoP Protocol™ ensures that business development is both sustainable and ethical. The Protocol uses a unique set of business tools and practices adapted from social anthropology and Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) to build what we call an MNC’s “native capability”. This native capability consists of the ability to:

1. Engage in deep listening and mutual dialogue with income-poor communities.
2. Co-discover and co-create new business opportunities and business models embedded in the local cultural infrastructure.
3. Co-design and launch BoP businesses that generate mutual value for all partners.

It is our belief that sustainable, successful businesses at the Base of the Pyramid will emerge only through such a process of mutual partnership and co-creation.

The BoP Protocol is a collaboration of the BoP Protocol Working Group, to learn more about the Protocol and the Working Group please visit:

Current ESW Projects

SC Johnson working with communities in Kenya.

SC Johnson in Kenya

In 2005, The Base of the Pyramid (BoP) Protocol was field tested in Kenya as a partnership between Cornell University, SC Johnson and ApproTEC. The six-person BoP Protocol Pilot Team tested the Protocol in collaboration with local partners in the Nakuru District and the Kibera slum of Nairobi. The learning and insights gained during the SC Johnson Protocol implementation in Kenya were folded back into the Protocol development process as the basis for the second Protocol design workshop in October of 2005.

Today, Enterprise for a Sustainable World is partnering with Cornell Univeristy and SC Johnson to continue SC Johnson's Protocol work in Kenya via a pilot test of a new business in Kibera, an innovative business model co-developed in partnerships with local community groups.
